Grandson Sam's Birthday

Dear Sam,

For seven long years you have tried to tell us

How you feel.

We have listened with our limited senses, resources,

And know little more about you now

Than we did on the day you were born.

We try to imagine your frustration

With our inability to reach you

As we continue offering consolation prizes:

Strokes. Hugs. Reassuring voices.

Loving care and rocking motion.

Forgive us our shortcomings (our useless good wishes)

As we forgive those who are short in coming to us.

You teach that our own cries for attention

Are pathetic in relation to yours –

And our whining wholly unjustified.

  1. Sam has taught me so much about what's important in life. He's taught me to prioritize life in a way that I never thought possible. He's taught me that life is simple, don't complicate it. I can't imagine life without him and I love him to pieces. Happy Golden Birthday, bubba!

    Love,
    Momma
